Tone Horroh – (Pronounced: Tony Horror) – Plot Device by John Reyer Afamasaga

Definition

In a narrative that appears to be biographical fiction, the author reveals he is actually someone else in the story.

Reason

The author, for whatever reason, decides he would like to change something in the narrative.

Overview

Tone Horroh is a literary technique, although it was used as a plot device by the Novice AKA Johnny Reyer better known as the Poet Soldier in his works at www.etfiction.com and in the GUIOPERA; it took nearly two decades (seventeen years) for the designer/online producer to plan, create, and then apply the device to the work.

History

Timeline

1994: Pulp Fiction directed by Quentin Tarantino is released
2007: John Lazoo, along with a few other eBooks, is published at etfiction.com by Afamasaga.
2008: The first GUIOPERA, an online serial that runs from September 5 to December 25 each year, is published.
2011: Just prior to publishing the fourth GUIOPERA, John Reyer reveals on Facebook that the character in his intertextual and Metafiction work known to fans as AFAMASAGA, or the PACIFICAN and John Reyer Afamasaga is Tone Horroh, inspired by Tony Rocky Horror from the movie Pulp Fiction by Quentin Tarantino.

Background

Afamasaga, a fan of Pulp Fiction, found the reference to Tony Rocky Horror, half-black and half-Samoan, and overweight, whom Marsellus Wallace had allegedly thrown over the balcony for giving Mia Wallace, Marsellus’ wife, a foot massage to be slightly offensive but highly amusing.

When Afamasaga began writing his work, spearheaded by John Lazoo (a typical hitman type character), he knew that one day he would eventually have to change his voice so he could extend the use of his narrative to carry messages other than the threat of taking someone out in cold blood.

In April 2011, he posted two comments on his Facebook profile, both less than 400 characters long. First, a backstory for his character Tone Horroh, inspired by Tarantino’s Tony Horroh, followed by his own idea for a possible outline for Pulp Fiction II.

Through his comments, Afamasaga implemented the “Tone Horroh” Plot Device—the blaming of a fictional character from a movie for all that the character known as John Reyer Afamasaga in his work is responsible for.

The Premise

As far as the work (etfiction and GUIOPERA) is concerned, all the work published prior to 2011 was written to catch Tone Horroh’s attention; Tone Horroh was using Afamasaga’s name to hide from Marsellus Wallace who had told Horroh to disappear when Wallace caught Tone and his wife having an affair.

Rules for applying “Tone Horroh” Plot Device

1) The work is an autobiographical narrative in the Metafiction genre
2) Application of the device gives the character (Author) a clean slate
